Ancient Chinese Strategic Culture and Its Implications For Chinese Cyber War Doctrine

China has a rich and provocative history that has made an indelible imprint on the country today. With such treatises on warfare like The Art of War and the Six Secret Teachings, the essays that broach this subject encompass the strategic thought of those historic times. Through these texts, China demonstrates the many evolutions of its military doctrine, and now, as China continues to expand and grow in power, they are the best indicator of how China will act in a military confrontation. The information age continues to evolve and progress and cyber forces are becoming a staple of developed military powers, and China is not being left out. In fact, cyber forces in China play a far larger part of its overall defense doctrine than one might think. Through looking at China's current doctrine and these ancient texts, there are a myriad of conclusions that can be made about how the Chinese military will employ these units, which could be crucial in any future conflicts. Taking into account these factors, as well as the current U.S. cyber force structure, we can make recommendations on how the U.S. should tailor its defenses to best ensure the defense and protection of U.S. interests. Thus, it is imperative to look at ancient Chinese strategic culture to know how China will implement its cyberwar doctrine.
