Shielded by Athena: Mythical and Biblical Allusions and the Aesthetic Sensibilities of Louise Gluck's Poetry

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Louise Glück is a contemporary American poet who has established herself as a major figure in the literary world. Her work includes poems that use mythical and biblical allusions, often using personae from those sources to frame personal stories. Glück's poetry can be read in light of the New Aesthetics movement; her subject matter, though personal, speaks on larger societal themes in carefully crafted work with layers of meaning that reflect the complexities of truth, paving the way for new poets to combine form and content into the poetry of the future.
