The Land Of A Million Smiles: Tourism And Modernization In Taney County And Stone County, Missouri 1900-1930

This inquiry explored the beginnings of commercial tourism in Missouri's White River Valley. Research utilized printed media such as newspapers, magazines, promotional items and books, and personal interviews. Findings indicated that modernization in the White River area both caused and resulted from tourism. Tourism in this region was one manifestation of the national back-to-nature movement which derived from an Arcadian myth of rural utopianism prevailing at the turn of the twentieth century.
