Federal Bureau of Prison Wardens' Correctional Orientation to Rehabilitation

Over the past two decades, the ideology governing correctional policy has been transformed, it is claimed, from a liberal-rehabilitative orientation to a more conservative-punitive orientation. Little empirical information is available, however, on whether those who manage correctional institutions, prison wardens, exhibit a punitive or reformative orientataion to their work. Data from a survey of Federal Bureau of Prison Wardens indicate that while placing a prime emphasis on maintaining custody and institutional order, the correctional orientation was not influenced by individual, career, and/or organizational variables.
