A Case Study Exploring the Use of Evocation to Enhance the Reading Comprehension of Special Needs Students in the Fifth Grade

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of evocation to enhance the reading comprehension of special needs students in the fifth grade. Data were collected from the Garfield Elementary Reading Attitude Survey, Classroom Assessment of Reading Processes, student interviews, student artifacts, and classroom observations. The focal group consisted of three students displaying an average IQ, who had been diagnosed with a learning disability in the area of reading comprehension, and displayed one or more at-risk factors as identified by qualifying for the free or reduced lunch program. This study found that the use of evocation resulted in improved comprehension. Recommendations for researchers, teachers and parents are included.
