They are generally considered suitable for use only until the dwelling can be connected to a central sewage disposal system. Recent studies, however, have shown that with proper design, construction, and maintenance, onsite wastewater disposal systems can be a viable, permanent means of wastewater disposal in many areas. This study describes the environmental problems that have resulted from the uncontrolled use of septic tanks in Taney County, Missouri, a rapidly developing rural county in the Missouri Ozarks. The study suggests that a comprehensive wastewater management plan can solve the county's waste disposal problems. The management plan divides the unincorporated portion of the county into a series of management districts, based on the density of septic tanks.
