Boating, fishing, swimming, and water skiing, along with the supporting service industries, provide the country with a large portion of its economy. Unfortunately, the water quality which means so much to Stone County is threatened from several sources. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources lists water contamination due to faulty septic systems as a primary concern for the Ozarks region of Missouri. Pollutants leaching from landfills and sedimentation caused by sheet erosion are also considered threats to water quality. The data presented in this thesis show a strong correlation between development along Highway 13 and subsequent water pollution.
