Investigation of the Geology and Hydrology of Stone County, Missouri to Determine the Extent of Groundwater Contamination

Stone County is underlain by limestones, dolomites, shales and sandstones ranging in age from Ordovician to Mississippian. The exposed sedimentary sequence is approximately 500 feet thick and approximately 2100 feet of unexposed rocks ranging in age from Cambrian to Ordovician make up the complete sedimentary sequence to the Pre-Cambrian igneous and metamorphic basement. The geology was studied to determine the extent of groundwater contamination by sampling water from 82 springs for optical brighteners which are fluorescence dyes in detergents that are associated with groundwater contamination. Of the springs sampled with houses in their assumed recharge areas, 47 percent were positive for optical brighteners.
