Location of Septic System Failures in Southwest Missouri Using False Color Infrared Photography

Abstract

Locating septic system failures with false color infrared photography is a viable method of environmental evaluation that can be used as part of an education program designed to increase public and official awareness. Septic system failures are a problem in southwest Missouri due to their extensive use and the use of groundwater as a domestic water supply. This technique of evaluation is not now a part of the routine evaluation by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources but should be. This routine evaluation should be accompanied with an education program to make the public aware of the problem of failures and to help officials devise controls for the problem.
