This report investigated the different mechanisms that may be responsible for the liberations of copper, chromium, and arsenic from pressure-treated lumber. Leaching with cleansers, leaf extracts, and model compounds under several different scenarios provided data that suggests the chelation of CCA components by phenols and carboxylic acids is the major pathway for the metals' release while acidity of the leachate, ion exchange, and contact time may offer minor increases in CCA loss.
