Antigenic Variation in Candida Albicans

The antigenicity of the germ tube and the yeast phase of Candida albicans have been compared by crossed immunoelectrophoresis, tandem-crossed immunoelectrophoresis and classical immunoelectrophoresis. Qualitative and quantitative differences between the two growth forms have been observed. One unique antigen to the yeast phase was found. Possible roles of phase-specific antigens in the study of pathogenicity of C. Albicans are discussed. The crossed immunoelectrophoresis technique proved to be a more sensitive method for antigenic studies than classical immunoelectrophoresis.
