An Independent Palestinian Arab State: Military and Strategic Implications

<p>This thesis will explore the military and strategic implications of a Palestinian Arab state on the "West Bank." Palestinian Arab leadership is threatening to declare a state in the West Bank in May 1999. Considering military and strategic risks, this thesis will explore the costs and risks to Israel of such a state. It will survey the 1993 Oslo Accords and the various withdrawal plans from the occupied territories, and the political arrangements possible for the new political entity on the West Bank. It will in conclusion offer recommendations to alleviate risks, looking at options such as demilitarized zones, no-man's lands, and peace-keeping forces. There being the possibility that Israel will not deny the Palestinian Arabs their state once the declaration is made, this thesis will describe the possible political nature of a Palestinian Arab state and the likelihood of a Palestinian Arab state becoming a springboard for hostile states and terrorist organizations. This includes the form of government as well as the extent of sovereignty and independence it will have from the Israeli government.</p>
