Political Instability, Terrorism, and Proliferation in Algeria, Egypt and Libya

This thesis examines the nature of politics and government in Algeria, Egypt, and Libya, focusing on the interactions among the military establishment, Islamic fundamentalists, other political opposition forces, and the regimes in power. With this context and current political and social instabilities established, the thesis analyzes two major international security threats from the region: terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Once the treat from the Southern rim of the Mediterranean is defined, this study concludes by prescribing measures for a more focused and coherent U.S. and Western European policy toward the area.
