Special Care Units: a Practical Guide to Establishing and Maintaining a Therapeutic Environment For Those Affected By Alzheimer's and Other Dementing Diseases

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Special Care Units are the future for long-term geriatric-care facilities. The advances in technology in modern health care, and the aging of the Baby Boomer generation fuel this trend in health care. Life expectancies have increased, allowing people to live longer than ever before. Unfortunately, with aging comes the increased chance to be affected by dementia. According to the Alzheimer's Association, one in ten people age sixty-five have a chance of developing a dementing disease. The odds increase to one in every two people by age eighty. Alzheimer's Disease is just one of the dementing diseases--there are many. Special Care Units are special environments created to meet the needs of those afflicted with the dementing diseases. This manual is a working tool providing the information necessary to develop and maintain an effective Special Care Unit.
