Analyzing Political Party Affiliation Versus Issue Orientation and Investigating Correlates of Party Affiliation

This thesis concerned political party affiliation and issue orientation. The purpose of this study was to ascertain if voters' orientation on issues agreed with those of their political party of choice. Three hundred and thirty-seven registered voters in the 138th Legislative District in Greene County, Missouri were surveyed at random. The study found that the respondents' issue orientation did agree with their party of choice on a majority of the issues. A personal interview method was also utilized. Ten Democrats and 10 Republicans were interviewed in Springfield, Missouri. This study found parents' party affiliation to be a good predictor of offspring's party of choice. This study also found sex and age not to be a significant factor in issue orientation.
