An Evaluation of a College Reading/Study Skills Course Using the Factors of Grade Point Average and Attrition

The problem of this investigation was to assess the effectiveness of Reading 107, the reading and study skills course at Southwest Missouri State University, in terms of semester grade point average, cumulative grade point average, semester completion and graduation. Specifically the problem was outlines as follows: 1) To compare the semester grade point averages of the participant group with the non-participant group, 2) To compare the cumulative grade point averages of the participant group with the non-participant group, 3) To compare the attrition rates measured by semester completion of the participant group with the non-participant group, 4) To compare the attrition rates measured by graduation of the participant group with the non-participant group. The participant group consisted of those students who obtained scores between 13 and 15 inclusive on the ACT composite while also obtaining scores between 11 and 13 inclusive on the social studies reading test of the ACT. This group participated in and completed Reading 107 during the fall of 1979. The non-participant group consisted of those students who obtained scores between 13 and 15 inclusive on their ACT composite while also obtaining scores between 14 and 15 inclusive on the social studies reading test of the ACT. This group did not participate in Reading 107 during the fall of 1979 or any subsequent semester.
