The Effect of Cooperative Learning on Math Achievement of First Grade Students: an Experimental Study

This study was undertaken to determine if the incorporation of cooperative learning would have an effect upon the math achievement of first grade students. Two intact classrooms were used in the study, one receiving cooperative learning techniques and the other receiving only traditional techniques. The California Achievement Test was administered to both groups in this study, both as a pretest and a post-test. After the study, results from the California Achievement Tests using analysis of covariance displayed a .2166 level of significance. This indicated that a difference however, not a significant difference existed between the two groups. Therefore, this study found that cooperative learning techniques are helpful to some children and should be considered for use in classrooms in addition to traditional techniques.
