A Study of Elementary Art Education: Its Importance as Perceived By Elementary Classroom Teachers

The purpose of this study was to determine the state of art education and the attitudes of classrom teachers towards it, and to present a description of the current trends and beliefs surrounding art education. A survey of 21 questions was completed by 50 elementary classroom teachers. Analysis was based on tabulation in means, ranges, and total numbers. The analysis of data indicated that there is a lack of a complete art education, and in some cases an absence of any, in some schools in the Southwest Missouri region, even though most teachers valued it as important. It was also discovered that art teachers and classroom teachers do not collaborate with, or consult each other in regard to combining art with other subjects.
