Parental Opinions of Cooperative Learning in Elementary Schools

The purpose of this study was to determine the opinions of parents towards cooperative learning in elementary classrooms. Parental opinions of teaching social-skills and the use of group grades were also investigated. A need for parent education on the research and use of cooperative learning was assessed. Parents were surveyed to determine their opinions of cooperative learning in comparison with competitive and individualistic learning structures. An analysis of the data collected during this study indicated much agreement in favor of cooperative learning, and opposition towards competition. Parents were undecided about individualistic methods and group grades. Most parents were in agreement that the teaching of social-skills in schools is as important as academics. The data revealed that parents generally wanted to know more about cooperative learning research, and would be willing to attend informational meetings.
