How Elementary Teachers Perceive the Role of Paraprofessionals

The purpose of the study was to develop a definition for the role that paraprofessionals play in education. Elementary classroom teachers and special education teachers were surveyed to find out what duties paraprofessionals are expected to do, and how teachers would like to change the role of paraprofessionals. The analysis of data indicated that teachers do prefer having a paraprofessional assisting them. Teachers are using paraprofessionals to make copies at the copy machine, and to work "one-on-one" with students. Teachers do not wish to change the role of paraprofessionals, because making copies at the copy machine is the duty that teachers want the most assistance. The age, grade level, and teaching experience of the teacher did not reflect much variance in the way that paraprofessionals have been utilized.
