The Perceived Causes For the Shortage of Minority Teachers
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived causes for the shortage of ethnic minorities in the teaching profession. Undergraduate ethnic minority students at Southwest Missouri State University who were not education majors were surveyed to determine their reasons for not choosing teaching as a profession and their feelings about the teaching profession. The analysis of data indicated that most students felt that the reasons ethnic minorities do not elect to teach were that standardized tests keep ethnic minorities from entering college, minority students must pass competency-based tests for admission into teacher education programs and for certification, teachers are not given adequate compensation for the jobs they do, more employment opportunities in fields other than education are available to ethnic minorities, and salaries, fringe benefits, and future advancements in other fields are greater when compared to teaching.
