Morals Education in the Public Schools

This study was to investigate the degree to which elementary teachers in the Southwest Missouri area convey moral messages to children in a normal classroom setting and if teachers use a direct or indirect method of instruction for the teaching of values. The study included 70 teachers from grades kindergarten through sixth grade; special education teachers were included. The data were compiled from results of a questionnaire. Analyses of the data collected during this study indicate that teachers feel very strongly about teaching values and morals education in the classroom. An overwhelming majority of the teachers teach values in a normal classroom setting. Indirect methods of instruction are more favorable than direct methods.
