Prediction of Elementary Student Reading Achievement From Specific Home Environment Variables
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this study was twofold: to determine the relationship between reading achievement and certain social and literary variables of the home environment and to determine what combination of these variables would most accurately predict reading achievement. A parent survey was distributed to all students in Grades 1 through 6 of one school. All data were available for 492 students. A correlation matrix was generated by using the Pearson product-moment formula. A stepwise multiple regression analysis computed the predictors of reading achievement. The educational level of the father was both highly significant to and the greatest predictor of reading achievement. The strongest relationships with, and predictors of, reading achievement, from the literary variables, were reading to the child before school entry and the variety of printed materials in the home.
