Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this paper is to provide a basic understanding of three experimental design techniques and how they can be applied in an industrial setting. A discussion of the three primary methods--classical, Taguchi, and Shainin is provided. Also, a series of full factorial experiments were conducted at a manufacturing company. These experiments were run for three different machining operations using two different types of tools. The data analysis provides information on determining the optimal parameters for the different operations. Experimental design can be used in either the design or production phase of a product to reduce variation. The experimenter must analyze his/her situation to determine which method would be most appropriate.
