Battle For the Bible: a Rhetorical Analysis of the Inerrancy Movement in the Southern Baptist Convention, 1979-1985

Between the years 1979 and 1985 the Inerrancy Movement was the latest controversy in Southern Baptists' "Battle for the Bible" in the twentieth century. Analyzing this movement the historical-interpretative method of rhetorical analysis was used. The hypothesis was proved: rhetorical themes and techniques used in Southern Baptists' legacy of doctrinal controversy from other debates recurred in the Inerrancy Movement, and the participants, both defender and aggressor orators, portrayed themselves as ''real Southern Baptists," rhetorically claiming their right to be the church by presenting evidence which attempted to prove that their beliefs were the "traditional and historical Baptist" doctrinal positions concerning the Holy Scripture.
