A History of the Mid-America Singers of Springfield, Missouri

Prior to this study, there has been no documented history of the Mid-America Singers of Springfield, Missouri. This study recorded a brief history of Springfield and its early settlement, a brief history of cultural activities in the city and in Southwest Missouri, a brief history of community choral groups in America and particularly in the Midwest, and the sequence of events that occurred since the inception of the Mid-America Singers in 1967 to 1985. Each of the four conductors of the Mid-America Singers was given a complete chapter in the study: Samuel Gordon (1967-1974); G. Robert Chancellor (1974); Darrell Benne (1975-1982); and Charles Facer (1982 to the present). Also discussed is the outreach of the Mid-America Singers into schools and other organizations in Springfield, Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas, the funding of the Mid-America Singers and important events such as a national bicentennial appearance in Washington, D.C. The study includes lists of personnel through the years, Constitution and By-Laws of the organization and selected programs.
