Abstract
dc:description.abstractMark Twain wanted the reader to believe that the numerous dialects represented in Adventures in Huckleberry Finn were scientifically accurate. Instead, an examination of Huck Finn's speech in chapter one revealed that Twain employed a literary dialect, not a scientific dialect. Aspects of Huck's literary dialect that were examined include: pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. In addition, some of the numerous factors that influence an individual's dialect were considered.
