Heterogeneous Photooxidation of Trichloroethene on Titanium Oxides Encapsulated in Zeolites L and Y

dc:description.abstractThe room temperature heterogeneous photooxidation of Trichloroethene (TCE) on titanium particles (TiOx) encapsulated in zeolite pores was studied using Transmission FT-IR. The decomposition was performed by utlizing two distinctly different pore structures. These were the interconnected supercages of zeolite Y and the parallel channeled system of zeolite L. The observed products and intermediates showed similarities to products observed on bulk TiO₂. However, product distributions were unique to both encapsulated zeolite samples and yielded smaller amounts of chlorinated by-products. Additional analysis using water vapor and reduced oxygen pressure was conducted and the products and intermediates observed. From these analyses a TCE decomposition rate comparison of all samples was prepared and discussed. It was found that TiOx/Y has the faster rate of TCE decomposition than the other catalysts used including bulk TiO₂.
