Warfare in the Fifth Realm: the Tools and Techniques of Cyberwar

The information technology revolution may have led to the emergence of a new realm of warfare, and new methods of doing battle. Within the electronic communications network known as cyberspace, nations and other organizations are engaging in offensive and defensive operations suggesting that cyberspace may in the future be a vital theater of war. The technologies and techniques of such operations are being developed now, and it is vital that a thorough understanding of the nature of such tools be achieved so that the United States can ensure its success in cyberspace warfare. This thesis will undertake a detailed examination of the offensive and defensive methods for doing battle in cyberspace, in an attempt to define the nature of such conflict. In addition it will examine national security policy related to such operations, evaluating the level of threat faced by the United States from attacks through information technology mediums. Finally, the author will suggest some important evolutionary directions for national security policy so as to ensure that America is fully capable of achieving security and victory during any future war in cyberspace.
