Clinicians' Perceptions of the Effectiveness of Group Therapy For Aphasia

Speech-language pathologists' beliefs of group therapy effectiveness for patients with aphasia were examined, and the results are presented in this paper. Seventy-five SLPs who specialize in neurogenic communication disorders completed and returned questionnaires. After the data was analyzed, it was determined that most participants believed a combination of individual and group treatment was most beneficial to communication improvement in individuals with aphasia. Further, the relationship between perceived effectiveness of group treatment when considering time post-onset of injury was found to be significant. Finally, a thorough description of procedures used by participants in group treatment settings is presented. In order to substantiate and support these findings, research within a group treatment research study that involves examination of patients with aphasia is needed.
