The Vascular Flora of Bona Glade Natural Area, Dade County, Missouri

Abstract

A survey of vascular flora of Bona Glade Natural Area, Dade County, Missouri, was made between September 1985 and December 1986. An annotated checklist of 265 taxa representing 69 families, and 173 genera is included. This includes 23 previous collections from Bona Glade. Seven plant communities with their dominant species are described based upon minimal sampling data and subjective field observations. Soil test data for macronutrients and pH from representative localities on the glade reveal very acid sandy loam soils which are relatively infertile. Bedrock is Pennsylvania Channel Sandstone. Some rare or endangered species, such as Geocarpon minimum, occur here. Studies of comparative growth rates and annual ring increments were made from cross-sections of Eastern Redcedar collected from adjacent glade habitats. Original baseline weather data was analyzed and compared to the annual ring increments of Juniperus to reveal a biennial pulse related to a 2-year cycle in weather conditions.
