Use of Artificial Nesting Cavities By Wood Ducks (Aix Sponsa) and Other Species in an Urban Environment

Usage of seventy artificial nest boxes designed for the Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) was observed during the spring and summer months of 1989 and 1990 on a lake located in a residential area of Springfield, Missouri. Data were collected on nesting and non-nesting species, predation, and competition among species from boxes placed in various habitat areas. To increase a breeding population of Wood Ducks, proper box placement is a critical factor. Usage of boxes by other species must be considered in the placement of future boxes for the benefit of Wood Ducks. Boxes used by any wildlife species should be considered successful.
