The dynamics of 'systems building' : An analysis of process mutations
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis thesis investigates systems building in architecture. As the systems approach is an organized process for problem solving, the understanding of structural and functional relationships is essential. As systems building can be interpreted in terms of dynamic processes, that are transient and at times teleological in nature, an attempt is made to uncover and define the invariant and contingent factors. As a systems performance is determined by methods of prediction and specification, preferred techniques and directions are explored. As an analysis of process mutations can lead to insights into the creation of systems and their functioning, methods of evaluation are proposed that may make systems building more effective. As knowledge bases are often scarce or inappropriate for systematic applications, a framework for systemic support is outlined. This thesis does not propose anything new, instead it concentrates on uncovering the new in the old.
