This event symbolizes that China has entered the aging society. In the Chinese tradition, strong family support enables older Chinese to live with their children and age at home. The One Child Policy implemented in the 1970's will change the way families care for their older parents. This paper investigates the alternative living arrangements in China such as the institutions for the elderly, community support, and the master planned retirement communities. The strength and weakness of each living arrangement is highlighted. Suggestions of a three-tiered system are made.
