Using Starlogo Nova as a Classroom Assignment Orchestration Tool for Learning Computational Modeling in DC High Schools

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

DC-Models, a 4-year NSF project, is exploring the incorporation of computational modeling (CM) into the science curriculum of high school students in the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) to address the lack of relevant resources for computational thinking (CT) education. This project focuses on integrating the DC-Models science curriculum with StarLogo Nova (SLNova), a block-based programming/CM platform. Recognizing the limitations of SLNova’s existing functionality to effectively accomplish this goal, we explore designing and integrating a dedicated classroom assignment management platform within SLNova to address the gaps. The platform includes a centralized environment for students to view and teachers to manage classes and assignments, an assignment editor for seamlessly working on assignment questions and modifying SLNova models, and tools for monitoring student progress and answers. By reducing logistical barriers and unnecessary cognitive load, the platform enhances the educational experience of CM, allowing teachers to focus on teaching, students to focus on learning, and researchers to gain insights into student progress. Ultimately, this work contributes to the goal of providing all students access to CT education and skills for 21st century careers.
