Abstract
dc:description.abstractIn 1997, the Kyoto Protocol institutionalized carbon offsetting as a "market solution" to emissions, allowing companies and states to offset every tonne of carbon dioxide emissions with an equivalent tonne of carbon dioxide sequestered somewhere else. This logic of equivalence was enabled by a set of global metrics (such as the definition of "forest" under international law) that financialized the Earth's capacity to absorb carbon. Equatorial mountains became prime targets for the production of carbon credits through pine and eucalyptus plantations. In 2008, Ecuador became the first country to recognize the Rights of Nature, extending its jurisdiction to the scale of the planet and granting legal personhood to nonhuman entities such as mountains. More than a decade since it was first recognized, the Rights of Nature remains an elusive notion, easily absorbed into the logic of practices that reduce Nature to its exchange value.
