Development of a multiple-specimen, reversed-flexure fatigue tester and its application to the testing of titanium sheet
Abstract
dc:description.abstract"Advancing technology constantly increases the demands on existing engineering materials. These demands are extremely severe for aerospace materials where the necessity for a higher strength-to-weight ratio is complicated by little understood environmental effects. A major consideration when designing structures is the fatigue resistance of available materials. The goals of this investigation were the development of a multiple-specimen fatigue tester and the evaluation of the fatigue properties of commercially pure titanium in a room-temperature air environment. The resulting fatigue tester is capable of simultaneously testing six sheet specimens in reversed bending at speeds up to 2000 cycles per minute. Fatigue properties of 0.035-in. thick commercially pure, grade Ti-75A titanium sheet were evaluated and results are presented in the form of an S-N curve including data for the rolling and transverse directions. These data were analyzed statistically and compared with the results of previous investigations of this type material."--Introduction.
