Web development for P3DB and Fatplants

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Researchers working in plant biology have a wealth of data collected by labs across the globe to assist them in their studies. There are massive databasesS containing phosphorylation data, proteins, genes, and interaction data. In efforts to study plant lipid metabolism and to increase crop oil content, a way of organizing and making this data more accessible is a valuable tool to assist plant biology researchers in their studies. Fatplants and P3DB are two web applications designed to store and make searchable these large bodies of information. They both contain visualization tools, BLAST searching, and flexible searching tools. Over the last two years, I have contributed to the progress of both P3DB and Fatplants as a full stack web developer. I have implemented several core features and improved upon existing features throughout my time as a graduate research assistant. This includes frontend components like the interactive pathway viewing tool in both applications, backend improvements like helping rebuild the Fatplants database in MySQL, and assisting in management duties such as interviewing potential new team members. In addition to making these improvements, I have also provided documentation on different processes and components related to deployment and maintenance on the applications.
