Design and analysis of reconfigurable phased array antenna for wireless local area network applications

[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-COLUMBIA AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] Due to the large demand in designing antennas that have high performance with low cost, this work proposes a design of reconfigurable phased array antenna operating at the two frequency bands specified by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) applications (2.4 and 5GHz) with adjustable radiation characteristics. Two reconfigurable mechanisms have been proposed in this work. The first mechanism controls operating frequency by switching the antenna from 2.4GHz applications to those of the 5GHz and vice versa. The second one is devoted to accommodate the radiation pattern of the proposed antenna with the surrounding place geometry. The numerical models were simulated based on CST Microwave Studio. With aid of RF-MEMS switches, the antenna can switch between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz according to the required service. On the other hand, another two switches has been attached to the antenna to provide the reconfigurability of the radiation pattern. These switches enable the antenna to operate in two modes. Mode one is when four microstrip antennas are interconnected together to provide narrow beam suitable for covering corridors and long paths, whereas the second mode provides wider beam by interconnecting only two of the four antennas to cover wide rooms and lobbies. In each mode, radiation toward unintended areas has been minimized to enhance the performance of the antenna. After designing the antenna according to the theoretical aspects, some undesired radiations and resonances appeared due to the radiation of the truncated transmission lines. These residues have been eliminated by optimizing the transmission lines dimensions in such a way that corrupt any length can provides resonation. As a result, an optimized version has been presented in this work with no practical side effects.
