Abstract
dc:description.abstract[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] The thesis focuses on modeling work of thermosetting curing systems, specifically for polyurethane system and epoxy/amine system. Chapter 2 is the study on preheating impact on urethane foaming process with assistance of modeling approach. Chapter 3 is the application of further developed model in simulation of epoxy/amine curing. According to related previous work, a modeling/simulation program using MATLAB software has been developed for describing urethane modeling process. It can provide temperature, concentration and degree of polymerization profiles during a foaming process. It is regarded as a promising approach to understand the foaming process in kinetic and thermodynamic aspects. In Chapter 2, the model is further applied into practical use. In this study, biobased polyol is employed to prepare foams for its goodness to the environment and low cost. It is found that temperature has an impact on curing process, with higher temperatures leading to high curing rate and cure extent, additionally. Insufficiently cured foam can have inferior properties. In order to improve properties of resulted foams, preheating is used as an approach to raise the system temperature. Due to the similar mechanism of crosslink reaction system, the model has been further developed and applied to another thermosetting system in chapter 3: a curing process of epoxy/amine system. Chapter 3 introduces the system of epoxy resins and shows the details of related modeling work. Based on several main copolymerization reactions, a mechanistic model is developed to simulate the curing process of epoxy/amine system.
