Because of its critical role in signal transduction, the progression of breast cancer and its localization on the surface of several types of cancer cells, ErbB2 is a commonly used as a target for the search for protein and peptide ligands that may be useful as therapeutic and diagnostic agents for treating and imaging cancer. In the work described here, I used several commonly used in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo phage display techniques and binding assays in an attempt to discover such peptides. This work lead to the discovery a phage mutant which interferes with the usage of the phage display libraries of the type used during this research.
