AUTONOMY AND THE ANTHROPOCENE

Abstract

dc:description

This thesis dissertation addresses the question raised by the Anthropocene of rethinking the concept of autonomy which is no longer viable in the conditions of the new epoch. It explores how nature can be considered a condition of autonomy understood as the self-realisation of the individual identity. It also explores the notion of autonomy as self-limitation, that is, the idea that freedom can be compatible with planetary limits. Finally, it addresses some justice-related aspects, namely, climate and intergenerational justice as crucial aspects of a human rights-based conception of the idea of living well within planetary boundaries.
