Empirische Untersuchung zu der Beeinflussung durch die Triangologie Mensch, Technik, Organisation für erfolgreiche Investitionsprojekte am Beispiel der Schweizerischen Bundesbahnen SBB

The presented thesis investigates the influence of the triangology Man, Technology, Organization (MTO) on successful investment projects. Using the example of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), an empirical study was conducted to determine why projects may be successful or unsuccessful under the same conditions. Practical experience and extensive literature research show that project success is almost exclusively defined by costs, deadlines and quality. Methodological approaches used in project management are very well described in the international context. However, consistent adherence to procedures described in the literature does not guarantee project success. In the search for explanatory approaches, the multi-level approach to MTO has come into focus. It has become evident that the link between triangology MTO and its impact on investment projects, and thus as elements in the project management process, has not been examined yet. This thesis departs from the assumption that certain characteristics from MTO have an influence on the project management process and thus the project success. The aim is to identify these characteristics and to make them accessible to science and practice. The research framework of this study is based on the following research questions: "What is the significance of the triangology MTO in successful or unsuccessful investment projects and to which characteristics can this be attributed?" and "How can entrepreneurially important investments be realized without negative deviations (costs, deadlines, quality) in a target- and effect-oriented manner?" This thesis applies a combination of methods consisting of expert interviews and an online survey. The expert interviews and the theoretical frame of reference, including literature research, form the basis for the development of a standardised online questionnaire. Practical relevance is established by means of a cross-sectional analysis of the investigation environment and three case studies. This investigation shows that existing knowledge in project management alone does not suffice to guarantee project success. The scientific evidence presented identifies those characteristics of MTO that lead to new understanding in project management and contribute to increasing the chances of project success. A catalogue of characteristics and a project evaluation tool are presented based on these findings. This investigation therefore makes an important contribution to science and practice at times when companies become increasingly project-oriented.
