This dissertation examines how the personal suitability of supervisory boards as well as their committee organisation and supervisory board work affect the control of management. A special focus is placed on the social and health economy. A critical review of the literature with regard to national and international study results and publications compares the discrepancy between aspiration and reality. Professional committee structures of German stock corporations and semi-professional supervisory board work in medium-sized and small social enterprises are examined. In order to address this divergence, this paper focuses on how voluntary supervisory boards exercise their control function. This focus is achieved by addressing the gap in current knowledge about volunteer board work and how board members experience their supervisory role from their own perspective. The research takes the form of a study that focuses on board members in the social and health economy and uses a qualitative methodology that includes twenty-three semi-standardised expert interviews. However, in order to obtain a holistic view of the topic, the study follows Mayring's approach in its analysis procedure, which includes supervisory board chairpersons and ordinary board members of boards from hospitals in the health economy in municipal, private or non-profit sponsorship as well as companies in the social economy. This research project examines how committee members are qualified, how they continue their education and how their success is measured in order to fulfil their own tasks. The dissertation presents a new understanding of how board members understand their own role, how board work functions and how new board members are recruited. The study provides evidence of a discrepancy between the aspiration and reality of voluntary board work in the social and health economy and enables ideas for needs-oriented training and further education of board members as well as the further development of board work.
