Photographs in the therapy room: a grounded theory study

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study explores the potential benefits of integrating photographs as a clinical tool within psychological therapies. Whilst there is a growing acknowledgment of the therapeutic value of photographs, research validating their efficacy in clinical practice remains scarce. This research gap served as a catalyst for the present investigation, grounded in a commitment to empirically evaluate the alleged therapeutic advantages of employing photographs in counselling sessions. Using Constructivist Grounded Theory (CGT), this study explores HOW and WHY photographs are introduced in therapeutic work, as well as WHAT transpires when therapists and clients engage with these visual tools. Specifically, the research focuses on the motivations and timing behind their introduction, the processes unfolding between therapists and clients, and the impact of this intervention on the therapeutic relationship and the overall therapeutic process. Eleven psychological therapists, each with experience using photographs with their clients, were interviewed to gather valuable insights. The findings of this study are presented as a substantive propositional framework, suggesting how counselling psychologists and psychotherapists could incorporate photographs into their toolbox of clinical interventions. The results indicate that the considerate and contextually appropriate application of this flexible tool can be useful to address a range of presenting issues and clinical situations. It can facilitate therapeutic dialogue, enrich communication, aid the exploration of meanings and insights, promote collaboration, understanding, and enhance the connection between the client and the therapist.
