An Analysis of English-Medium Press Coverage of the Treaty Ports as an Issue in Irish Neutrality , 1938 -1943
Abstract
dc:description.abstractIt is through the press that we can gain insights into the feelings and opinions of the Irish, British and the United States populations regarding the treaty ports issue and the impact it had on their lives during the war. The pattern of public opinion and how it changed at various stages of the war from acceptance of the return of the ports, to hostility and back to acceptance again, can be gleaned through the press. It is in the recording and analysis of this, which has not, to my knowledge, ever been attempted before, that this thesis gains its value.
