From Family Systems to Social Justice: Understanding Resilience Among Asian American Sexual and Gender Minoritized Individuals
Abstract
dc:description.abstractFamily support is a well-established protective factor for sexual and gender minoritized (SGM) populations, yet its role among Asian American SGM individuals remains underexamined. Existing research shows that family rejection in this population is associated with cultural identity conflicts, family shame, and internalized homophobia, which contribute to heightened psychological distress. However, little is known about how family support, or its absence, shapes mental health for Asian American SGM individuals, particularly in relation to coping mechanisms that may buffer the effects of low family support. Although social support is generally protective for SGM communities, experiences of racism within broader SGM spaces may restrict access to affirming networks and exacerbate minority stress. Emerging evidence suggests that activism engagement can mitigate the negative impacts of racial discrimination for Asian Americans, yet its potential role as a protective factor for Asian American SGM individuals navigating intersectional discrimination has not been explored. This study investigates the association between family support and psychological well-being among Asian American SGM individuals and examines whether activism engagement moderates the impact of limited family support. Findings contribute to clinical, community, and theoretical spheres by informing culturally responsive mental health interventions, highlighting the need for affirming and racially inclusive support spaces, and advancing understanding of intersectional minority stress processes.
