Lift on a rotating cylinder

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The object of this project was primarily to find whether lift on a rotating cylinder in an air stream increases with increase in roughness of cylinder. All previous experiments on the subject (within the knowledge of the writer and subject to the limitation of the references entered at the end of this report( limited themselves to small ranges of cylinder speed and wind speed ratios. Thus the increase registered especially in the paper submitted by A. Thom. were not of very significant encrements. Also within the references here submitted the writer failed to read any attempt made in explaining the various stages of lift occurring in a real fluid except the ex planation given by Prandtl, who failed to ex plain the high lift obtained in Thom's experiments, and also in the present experiments. This was pointed out by Thom. in his paper. In this report an attempt has also been made at explaining and comparing the various peculiarities which distort the real fluid lifts experienced in the writer's experiments and various other similar experiments.
