Analogue simulation

Abstract

There are two distinct classifications of computers - digital and analogue (hybrid computers being a combination between the two). The digital computer is basically a device which counts and performs other operations using discrete voltage levels (this noise being no problem). The analogue computer operates continuously at all voltages (limited by the power supply), from zero frequency upwards to a certain limitation depending upon the equipment. Due to its continuously variable output, the problems most suited to analogue solution are those involving systems of differential equation, linear or non-linear, with constant or variable coefficients. Such problems must often lie in the field of engineering design, research and development. Given the differential equations, the amplifiers are connected to perform the mathematical operations indicated by the terms of differential equations. The accuracy of the solution obtained is limited by the precision with which the result could be read out, by the ability of the human operator and by the circuit components (including the amplifiers). Thus digital computers have the advantage of accuracy over analog ones. However the latter are very important in simulation.
