Technical analysis and documentation of seventeenth-century works printed in Malta

The main purpose of this dissertation has been to carry out a technical analysis of the physical aspects of all known Maltese-printed materials from the 17th century. Given that so little is known on the subject and the fact that these publications have never been approached from this perspective, it was felt to be an interesting and useful exercise. Beginning with clear documentation of all the bibliographical data, this study gives an ordered and detailed account of the present state of each publication under study. Other, previously undocumented characteristics such as watermarks and all the decorative elements are also included for comparative study. The watermarks have been given particular attention via their visual recording and an attempt made to trace their origin. Though not an exact science with regards to dating, the identification of the existing watermarks at least helps put into context where paper found in Maltese publications was originating from during the 17th century. These Maltese 17th century publications have been studied and examined according to the three categories in which they have been placed by Dr. William Zammit, with a mind to seeing whether these categories are fitting, and if not, what deviations and possible inconsistencies exist. Finally, the possible connection of Maltese print tradition with that of Messina is covered, with an eye to finding similarities and variations or the possible outcome of there being no connection at all.
